Residents have reported hearing severe gunfire and loud explosions near Niger's primary international airport, located just outside the capital of Niamey, during the early hours of Thursday. This incident has raised alarm among locals.

Numerous eyewitnesses noted that they experienced intense gunfire and explosions shortly after midnight in neighborhoods surrounding Diori Hamani International Airport. Social media videos seem to depict air defense systems engaging unidentified objects in the sky, though these reports have not been independently confirmed.

As per residents quoted by the AFP news agency, the disturbances lasted for nearly two hours before the situation began to stabilize. A representative from Niger's Foreign Affairs ministry later informed the Anadolu news agency that the situation is 'under control' and urged residents to remain calm, yet no further details were provided.

Heavy gunfire and explosions reported near Niamey airport

The reason behind the gunfire and explosions remains undetermined, and there have been no confirmations regarding casualties or structural damage. Niger's military-led government has yet to release an official statement regarding the event.

The airport, situated about 10 kilometers from the presidential palace, also serves as an air force base, prompting speculation about the potential for a security incident. The Foreign Affairs ministry official indicated that authorities are looking into whether the gunfire could be connected to a significant uranium shipment that is currently stranded at the airport.

Niger is one of the leading global producers of uranium, but its exports have faced disruptions since the military government took control of uranium mines, leading to ongoing legal and diplomatic tensions with France. Reports suggest that an important shipment intended for export has become stuck at the airport amid these disputes.

This alarming incident occurs amidst a backdrop of persistent insecurity in Niger. Similar to its neighbors Mali and Burkina Faso, the nation continues to contend with jihadist groups responsible for deadly assaults throughout the Sahel region.

Since a coup in 2023 that ousted the democratically elected government, Niger has been under the leadership of General Abdourahamane Tiani. Consequently, security concerns and strained international relations have posed ongoing challenges for the military authorities.
