Iran Aims to Enhance Bilateral Ties with Nigeria

Iran's Ambassador to Nigeria, Mahdavi Raja, has affirmed his nation's dedication to deepening bilateral ties with Nigeria by fostering cooperation in critical sectors, including shared economic sustainability and technological progress.

The envoy conveyed this message on Monday in Abuja during the commemoration of the 47th anniversary of Iran's Islamic Revolution, also known as the Victory of the Islamic Revolution of Iran.

The ambassador characterized Iran and Nigeria as significant regional actors with a long-standing friendly relationship built on mutual respect and shared objectives.

"Nigeria holds a distinct position in Iran's foreign policy," stated Mr. Raja.

He further added, "Furthermore, Iran's expertise in energy, agriculture, healthcare, technology, education, and engineering services positions it as a dependable partner for Nigeria's sustainable development."

He pointed out that Nigeria's substantial market, its human capital, and its pivotal role in West Africa present extensive opportunities for collaboration that benefits both nations.

The ambassador also conveyed his gratitude to the Nigerian Federal Government, members of the diplomatic community, and attending guests for gracing the event.

Nigeria's Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yusuf Tuggar, remarked that Nigeria views Iran as an important country in the Middle East and a valued member of the global community.

Mr. Tuggar, whose statement was delivered by Bukar Hamman, the Director of the Ministry's Regions Department, noted that relations between the two countries are governed by mutual respect and constructive dialogue, conducted through bilateral channels and multilateral forums, including the United Nations.

He highlighted that economic interactions between Nigeria and Iran have seen consistent growth over the years, encompassing areas such as energy-related products, agriculture, manufacturing inputs, and consumer goods, reflecting the complementary nature of their economies.

"Nigeria remains steadfast in its commitment to peaceful coexistence, respecting national sovereignty, and resolving disputes amicably through dialogue and adherence to international law," he stated.

Additionally, Governor Bala Mohammed of Bauchi State commented that Iran continues to be a significant partner for Nigeria, especially in trade, investment, and the promotion of economic self-sufficiency.

Mr. Mohammed revealed that an Iranian firm is in the process of establishing a lead and zinc industry in Bauchi State, with the aim of developing a complete value chain rather than exporting raw materials.

He also mentioned that discussions are underway with Iranian investors interested in agriculture and livestock development, including the introduction of modern ranching and breeding techniques to enhance productivity.

"Our presence here is to gain knowledge, strengthen bilateral relations, and assure Iranian investors that Nigeria is a welcoming country where they can conduct business without obstacles," the governor remarked.

Earlier, the Iranian Ambassador described the anniversary as an occasion for national introspection and renewed international engagement.

He emphasized that the 1979 Islamic Revolution signified the Iranian people's collective desire to reclaim their national sovereignty, independence, and dignity.

"The Islamic Revolution was more than just a change in political leadership; it ushered in national sovereignty, popular governance, and a rejection of foreign domination," he explained.

Mr. Raja noted that despite facing decades of external pressures and sanctions, Iran has achieved considerable success by leveraging its domestic capabilities, social cohesion, and skilled workforce.

He stated that Iran has made consistent progress in science and technology, expanded its knowledge-based enterprises, and achieved significant advancements in emerging technologies and the healthcare sector.

Economically, he reported that Iran has bolstered industrial output, increased non-oil exports, and established the groundwork for a diversified and resilient economy, even amidst challenging global economic conditions.

He further indicated that enhancements in healthcare coverage, pharmaceutical self-sufficiency, housing development, access to clean water, and communication infrastructure have contributed to improved living standards for its populace.

Mr. Raja also stated that Iran is pursuing a balanced and proactive foreign policy focused on dialogue, multilateralism, and cooperation, while simultaneously expanding its relationships with neighboring countries, emerging economic powers, and international organizations.

"Iran sees itself as a responsible and independent player on both regional and global stages, and it remains committed to peace, stability, and sustainable development," he concluded.

The ambassador also touched upon recent challenges faced by Iran, including economic hardships, security incidents, and external military and media campaigns.

He reiterated Iran's commitment to safeguarding its citizens, maintaining public order, and engaging in diplomacy based on mutual respect.

"The fundamental principle of diplomacy is the respect for sovereignty and mutual interests.

"Negotiations conducted under duress or threat are unlikely to be fruitful," he added.
