On February 4, local media outlets announced that Iran has officially allowed women to operate motorcycles, thereby ending a prolonged period of legal ambiguity regarding their right to ride motorbikes and scooters.
Although existing laws did not directly prohibit women from riding, in practice, authorities had refused to issue the necessary licenses, creating a significant gap in enforcement. This legal uncertainty led to instances where women were held accountable for accidents on two-wheelers.
On February 3, Iran’s First Vice President, Mohammad Reza Aref, signed a resolution intended to clarify traffic regulations. This resolution was sanctioned by the Iranian cabinet in late January, as reported by the Ilna news agency.
According to the resolution, traffic police are now required to provide practical training for female applicants, administer examinations under police supervision, and grant motorcycle licenses to women.
This regulatory shift comes in the wake of widespread protests across Iran, which began as a response to economic issues and escalated into extensive anti-government demonstrations in the previous month.
