Israel has intensified its airstrikes, launching new attacks on Beirut, the capital of Lebanon, and Tehran, Iran's capital, as the regional conflict expands into its seventh day with increased international involvement.
These latest strikes follow announcements from the United States indicating a strategy to escalate military pressure on Iran. US Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth stated that American operations targeting Iranian positions are anticipated to "surge dramatically," suggesting a potential significant expansion of Washington's military campaign.
Hegseth also suggested that access to the strategic Diego Garcia military base could aid the United States in scaling up its regional operations.
Meanwhile, US President Donald Trump has ruled out the deployment of American ground troops into Iran, describing such a move as unnecessary and "a waste of time." Trump further asserted that Iran had "lost everything they can lose" amidst the escalating hostilities.
Reports indicate that overnight strikes have occurred across multiple Middle Eastern locations, including Israel, Iran, Lebanon, and Bahrain, highlighting the broadening geographical extent of the ongoing confrontation.
The Israel Defense Forces reported executing a "broad-scale wave" of strikes against Hezbollah infrastructure in Beirut during the night. The Israeli military indicated that these actions were aimed at command centres and facilities allegedly involved in storing drones designated for attacks against Israel.
Several of these strikes impacted the Dahieh district, a heavily populated southern area of Beirut recognized as a stronghold for Hezbollah, a group supported by Iran.
The Israeli military noted that these strikes were preceded by an unprecedented evacuation order for residents in the affected area, directing them to leave before the bombardment commenced.
"The IDF will not tolerate any harm to be caused to the residents of the State of Israel," the military stated in a declaration explaining the rationale behind the operation.
The bombardments have heightened humanitarian concerns within Lebanon, compelling thousands of civilians to abandon their homes. Numerous residents from southern Beirut reportedly spent the night in vehicles, public spaces, temporary shelters, or with relatives after vacating their neighbourhoods.
Eyewitnesses described a climate of fear and haste as individuals scrambled to gather essential items before departing their homes.
"We only packed vital belongings like blankets," shared one woman who evacuated from Dahieh. "We are truly scared, but this is our land, and if war comes, we must endure. There is little we can do."
According to the Lebanese Ministry of Public Health, Israeli strikes in Lebanon have resulted in at least 123 fatalities and 683 injuries since Monday.
In response, Iran stated it had launched missile attacks toward Tel Aviv, indicating a continuing exchange of retaliatory strikes between the two nations.
The escalating conflict is also beginning to influence global energy markets and geopolitical strategies. In a related development, the United States Department of the Treasury has announced a temporary suspension of certain sanctions, permitting India to acquire Russian oil currently situated at sea.
US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent explained that the 30-day waiver aims to preserve stability in global oil markets and alleviate pressures stemming from Iran's regional actions.
He characterized the measure as a "deliberate short-term step" intended to ensure the continued flow of global energy supplies without offering substantial financial advantages to Russia.
This decision follows Washington's imposition of sanctions on Russian oil exports in the wake of Russia's invasion of Ukraine, which compelled many international purchasers to seek alternative sources.
Concurrently, diplomatic efforts are underway to secure critical shipping routes within the Persian Gulf. Reports indicate that China is engaged in discussions with Iran to guarantee safe passage for vessels transporting crude oil and Qatari natural gas through the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz.
The Strait of Hormuz is recognized as one of the world's most crucial energy transit points, and any disruption to its traffic could have significant repercussions for global oil and gas markets.
