Jesse Jackson Jr., the son of the late civil rights activist Jesse Jackson, has voiced strong criticism against former Presidents Joe Biden, Barack Obama, and Bill Clinton regarding their tributes to his father at the memorial service.
At the memorial held at Chicago's House of Hope, Obama cautioned about the current state of the country, describing each day as a "new assault on our democratic institutions."
"Every day, we are urged by those in powerful positions to fear one another, to turn against one another, and to believe that some Americans are valued more than others, while others are deemed insignificant," the former president remarked.
He continued, stating, "All around us, we witness greed and bigotry being honored, while bullying and mockery are disguised as strength. Such times make it difficult to hold onto hope."
Biden also stated that the Trump administration lacks "any of the values that we uphold."
Former Vice President Kamala Harris, who lost to Trump in the 2024 election, claimed during her address that she had anticipated many of the current issues. "I’m not one to say I told you so, but we were aware of this eventuality," Harris commented.
Harris mentioned, "What I didn’t foresee was the absence of Jesse Jackson to guide us through these challenges."
In contrast to the other speakers, Clinton acknowledged Jackson fondly and largely avoided political discussions during his eulogy.
Nonetheless, Jesse Jackson Jr. expressed his disappointment with how the three former presidents honored his father. "I spent hours listening to three former presidents who do not truly understand Jesse Jackson," he stated at a private memorial service held at the Rainbow Push Coalition headquarters in Chicago.
He elaborated on the nature of Jesse Jackson's relationship with political leaders: "His connections with the political establishment were strained not due to the racial identities of the presidents, but because of the core tenets of our message, which advocated for the marginalized, the disregarded, and those in need. Jesse demanded a consistent voice that never compromised the dignity of our people, instead of merely settling for Democratic or Republican solutions."
"This encapsulates the essence of who Reverend Jesse Jackson was," Jackson Jr. concluded.
Jesse Jackson passed away at the age of 84 last month at his residence in Chicago.
