United Nigeria Airlines has reported that one of its Embraer 190 aircraft has been taken out of service due to damage sustained from jet blast at the domestic ramp of the Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos.
The airline stated that the aircraft, which had arrived from Akanu Ibiam International Airport, Enugu, on flight UN0503, was positioned between two aircraft of associated airlines in an open bay. While preparations were underway for passengers to board another flight, a neighbouring aircraft began its taxiing after completing its boarding process. Concurrently, another aircraft was executing a pushback onto the taxiway.
According to United Nigeria Airlines, the taxiing aircraft maneuvered in a way that created a significant jet blast in the ramp area. The force of this blast caused a baggage trolley, managed by a ground handling company, to be propelled into the United Nigeria Airlines aircraft, which was then being prepared for flight UN0500.
The airline specified that the collision resulted in damage to exterior components, including an antenna and the front section of the fuselage near the nose landing gear.
Upholding its stringent safety protocols, the airline has withdrawn the affected aircraft for a thorough examination prior to its return to active service. United Nigeria Airlines reaffirmed its dedication to maintaining the highest safety standards in its operations.
The airline extended apologies for any inconvenience this unexpected event may cause to passengers' travel plans and requested the understanding and patience of the public. The carrier assured that its team is working diligently to minimise any service disruptions and provide necessary support to affected travellers.
