The Jigawa State Emergency Management Agency has alerted residents to a heightened risk of flooding in numerous areas across the state in the coming months. The agency's Executive Secretary, Hannafi Yakubu Fagam, stated that Jigawa is among the states expected to experience significant flooding this year, with potential risks identified from April through November.
Local government areas identified as most vulnerable between April and June include Guri, Kiri Kasamma, Hadejia, Auyo, Miga, Ringim, Kaugama, Kazaure, Dutse, Birnin Kudu, Gwaram, Gantsa, and Malammadori. The advisory indicates that the flood risk is anticipated to escalate between July and September, potentially affecting additional LGAs such as Taura and Birniwa. By October and November, the threat is projected to continue in areas including Ringim, Miga, Auyo, Hadejia, Guri, and Malammadori.
SEMA is strongly advising residents, particularly those living in areas prone to flooding, to implement precautionary measures to mitigate the effects of potential disasters. Recommended actions include the regular clearing of drainage channels and watercourses, ceasing the disposal of waste into drains, and refraining from constructing or occupying homes in flood-vulnerable locations.
The agency also advises households to maintain a stock of essential provisions like food, clean water, necessary medications, and lighting equipment. It is crucial to keep children away from floodwaters and open drainage systems.
Residents are further encouraged to stay informed about official weather forecasts, adhere to instructions from relevant authorities, and prepare safe shelters for evacuation should water levels rise significantly. The statement also emphasized that electrical appliances should be promptly switched off if floodwaters begin to enter homes.
SEMA highlighted the critical importance of promptly reporting any signs of danger to emergency officials, underscoring that proactive steps are essential for minimizing the loss of life and property. The agency concluded by stating, “Communities must remain vigilant and take responsibility for their safety as the rainy season approaches.”
