A second-year Biology Education student at Sa’adu Zungur University (SAZU) in Gadau, Maryam Yakeem, has suffered severe injuries, including the amputation of two fingers and partial disfigurement of her ear, after being attacked by suspected phone thieves. The incident occurred in Gadau town, within the Itas Gadau Local Government Area of Bauchi State, away from the university premises.
Locals have expressed alarm over the escalating number of violent phone theft incidents in the vicinity. According to eyewitness accounts, the victim was confronted by four assailants who demanded her mobile phone. During the confrontation, one of the attackers allegedly used a knife to inflict the serious injuries before absconding with the stolen device.
Residents have voiced their frustration over the recurrence of such attacks, urging security agencies to increase surveillance and apprehend the perpetrators. The Bauchi State Police Command has confirmed the incident and stated that an investigation is underway to track down the suspects and recover the stolen phone.
The victim is currently receiving medical attention at a facility in Gadau and may be transferred to the Federal Medical Centre in Azare for further treatment. The university has emphasized that the attack did not take place on its campus, countering earlier reports that suggested otherwise.
In a statement, the Public Relations Officer of SAZU, Mallam Auwal Hassan, clarified the situation, stating, "The unfortunate incident occurred outside the University environment, contrary to some misleading reports circulating in certain online media platforms suggesting that the attack took place within the University premises. The University Management wishes to categorically state that this claim is false and does not reflect the reality of the situation." He also noted previous efforts by the Vice-Chancellor to enhance security through collaboration with the State Commissioner of Police.
The university's Chief Security Officer and Dean of Students Affairs visited the injured student, whose condition is reported to be stable. Vice-Chancellor Professor Fatimah Tahir conveyed her sympathy and reassured the university community of its commitment to student and staff safety.
Management has called for calm and responsible reporting, while reiterating its dedication to working with law enforcement agencies to improve security measures both on and off campus.
