On Tuesday, the Jama'atu Nasril Islam (JNI) issued a strong condemnation of the assault that took place at Anguwan Rukuba market in Jos North Local Government Area of Plateau State, characterizing the incident as "heartless and reprehensible."
The Secretary-General of JNI, Khalid Aliyu, released a statement to journalists in Kaduna condemning the brutal attack.
"JNI, under the leadership of Sultan of Sokoto, His Eminence Sa’ad Abubakar, expresses shock and displeasure over the Plateau market incident," he remarked. Aliyu noted that the ongoing violence in Plateau and other regions of Nigeria seems to be systematically organized, which has the potential to provoke political and religious chaos.
He emphasized the sanctity of human life and urged for justice for all the victims, stating, "There should be retributive justice for all victims."
Aliyu highlighted the danger of merely issuing condemnations without implementing substantial responses, as this could encourage the perpetrators. He called on security agencies to enhance their efforts in capturing those responsible for this terrible act and ensuring they are held accountable according to the law.
He further warned that the continuation of such attacks poses a grave threat to peace and order not just in Plateau but throughout the nation. Aliyu voiced concern regarding disturbing video clips revealing the desecration of bodies, deliberately designed to incite discord among citizens.
The Secretary-General called for a thorough investigation into the incident and warned against making premature judgments based on ethnic or religious tendencies until thorough inquiries have been conducted.
He also urged the federal government to implement proactive and impactful measures to tackle insecurity, including a complete reassessment of the country's security framework with specific timelines for reform.
Aliyu, addressing the Plateau government, emphasized the need to take swift measures to prevent further attacks and potential retaliatory actions, while also providing compensation and medical assistance to the victims' families.
He insisted on a careful investigation into individuals featured in the viral videos, including an alleged foreign national, whose remarks at the scene were deemed incitive and derogatory.
In closing, he appealed to residents of Plateau, particularly the youth, to remain composed, uphold order, and strive for peaceful coexistence. He prayed for a return to peace and security in Plateau and across Nigeria, while also mourning the loss of lives in the attack.
