Did you notice Jon Batiste at the 2026 Grammys? His striking outfits were certainly hard to overlook. As he graced the red carpet, it became evident that his appearance was more than just a fashion statement; it was a carefully curated expression of style.
Curious about the source of his spectacular outfits? Batiste donned two custom designs by the Nigerian fashion label Eleven Sixteen, helmed by the talented stylist and creative Ugo Mozie, during the memorable Grammy Awards evening where he won the Best Americana Album.
Ugo Mozie is well-acquainted with dressing celebrities. His impressive portfolio features numerous icons, including Diana Ross, Leon Thomas, and even Beyoncé along with Blue Ivy during the Cowboy Carter era. Moreover, he has collaborated with several Nigerian artists such as Tiwa Savage, Asake, and Flavour. However, the Grammy outfits appear to hold a particular significance, interwoven with aspects of faith, cultural heritage, and storytelling.
Ugo shared that the outfits were a result of a partnership with Gogo Hsu, a master tailor he discovered in Taiwan. He described the process as spiritually enriching, drawing upon biblical visuals, especially the gem-adorned breastplate of Aaron and ancient mosaic artistry.
Upon his entrance, Jon Batiste wore a military-styled black sequined jacket, embellished with gold beaded shoulder pieces, intricate gold decorations, and vibrant jewel patches. With pearl-like button details for added texture, the look was completed with tailored black pants and Christian Louboutin loafers featuring gold chain accents.
Later on, he transitioned into another stunning ensemble: a black sequined long-sleeve shirt adorned with royal blue crystal-embellished stripes and decorative jeweled accents. He matched this outfit with black trousers and a gold crystal-encrusted belt decorated with dangling elements, finishing off with his hair styled in high twisted locs.
Ugo indicated that both of these remarkable outfits utilized a staggering total of over 100,000 Swarovski crystals, pearls, Colombian emeralds, and African gemstones sourced from Mina Stones, encapsulating the essence of what he calls 'spiritual armour expressed in couture.'
