Jose Peseiro, who previously managed the Super Eagles, shared insights on why Ademola Lookman opted to represent Nigeria rather than England on the international stage.
Lookman, born in England to Nigerian parents, held the eligibility to play for both nations. He initially committed to England and successfully progressed through their Under-19, Under-20, and Under-21 ranks.
However, in 2020, he made the significant choice to switch his allegiance to Nigeria’s national team, foregoing further opportunities with England.
In an interview with Marca, Peseiro revealed that a lack of further call-ups from England significantly influenced Lookman's decision.
"England ceased contacting him after his accomplishments at the Under-20 World Cup in 2017 and his participation with the Under-21s," Peseiro stated. "He was confused by their silence. Ultimately, since his parents hail from Nigeria, he agreed to join the Super Eagles shortly before my arrival."
This pivotal decision came as Lookman sought to carve out his professional identity in international football with Nigeria.
