Joseph Duke's Zulu Film Receives AMVCA Nomination

Joseph Duke, a talented Nigerian actor and filmmaker, has secured a nomination at the African Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards (AMVCA) for his Zulu-language film titled "Bet I Love You." This nomination is seen as a significant step for collaboration between filmmakers from Nigeria and South Africa.

Joseph Duke, a prominent actor and filmmaker from Nigeria, has garnered a nomination at the African Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards (AMVCA) for his Zulu- language film "Bet I Love You."

The film was co-produced by Duke alongside Keamogetse Modise.

As reported by PREMIUM TIMES, the film earned its place in the "Best Indigenous Language (Southern Africa)" category at the upcoming 12th edition of the AMVCA.

In response to this nomination, Duke expressed his delight and emphasized that this recognition exemplifies the potential and success achievable through cross-border collaborations in the African film industry.

He further stated that the film is a testament to the creative opportunities that emerge when Nigerian and South African filmmakers unite.

"It’s beyond borders, beyond language; it’s about a mutual vision. As a Nigerian presenting a Zulu narrative and being acknowledged in a South African category highlights that collaboration is not only feasible but impactful. This is the path African cinema must continue to follow," he remarked.

"Bet I Love You" was filmed in South Africa and was premiered at the Joburg Film Festival in 2025. The story weaves together humor and drama while delving into the implications of gambling alongside themes such as family, responsibility, and redemption.

The film, Bet I Love You

The plot revolves around Rex, a compulsive gambler who falls into severe trouble after misplacing the lobola money intended for his sister's wedding. As his addiction jeopardizes his family's honor and personal relationships, Rex struggles to recover the lost finances, leading to a series of comedic and heartfelt incidents.

Khumbuza Meyiwa stars as Rex, accompanied by Nosipho Majola, Smangele Mhlongo, and Gabisile Tshabalala in supporting roles. This film is a collaborative effort between Elects Network Studios, M-Net Showmax Original, and Urbanbrew Studios, with the screenplay penned by Thembakuye Madlala.

Originally released in South Africa on March 12, 2025, "Bet I Love You" exemplifies the rising trend of African filmmakers collaborating across borders to create more diverse and inclusive narratives.
