Saadatu Mohammed Inuwa, a Kannywood actress popularly known as Samha, received a six-month prison sentence after being convicted by Justice S.M. Shuaibu of the Federal High Court in Kano. The charge stemmed from her involvement in the abuse and mutilation of the Naira currency, which is a breach of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Act, 2007.
The actress was arrested on February 4, following the emergence of a social media video that depicted her using Naira notes to wipe her nose. The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) tracked her down after the clip went viral and took her into custody for further questioning.
Inuwa faced a singular charge regarding the mutilation of currency, specifically a 1000 Naira note. The accusation indicated that she tampered with the currency by soiling it with her nose, which is punishable under section 21 (1) of the CBN Act.
In court, Inuwa entered a guilty plea once the charge was read aloud. Subsequently, the prosecuting counsel, Musa Isah, presented the case's facts and urged for a conviction, arguing for a fitting sentence.
In her defense, Inuwa appealed to the court for leniency, highlighting her status as a first-time offender and expressing sincere regret for her actions. In response, Justice Shuaibu sentenced her to six months in jail, giving her the alternative of paying a fine of two hundred thousand Naira (N200,000).
