Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf of Kano State is gearing up to select a new Deputy Governor, prompting intense lobbying efforts from various interest groups within the All Progressives Congress (APC). These factions are advocating for their preferred candidates to secure the second-highest office in the state.
Both the Kano North and Kano South senatorial zones are reportedly engaged in efforts to influence the decision, aiming to establish strategic political advantages ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The APC Legacy Bloc has publicly declared its support for Dr. Rabiu Sulaiman Bichi for the Deputy Governor role. The bloc has also called on other aspirants who are facing corruption allegations to withdraw from the contest, emphasizing the importance of integrity.
In a statement released in Kano, a prominent member of the Legacy Bloc, Magaji Umar Gwammaja, explained that this endorsement followed extensive consultations with stakeholders after the former Deputy Governor, Aminu Abdussalam Gwarzo, resigned.
Gwammaja characterized Bichi as a candidate possessing "exceptional maturity and administrative depth." He highlighted Bichi's extensive experience in state, federal, and development sector institutions as key factors setting him apart from other potential candidates.
"He has the necessary competence, credibility, and a proven track record to effectively assist Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf's administration," Gwammaja stated.
The APC chieftain further emphasized that the bloc's stance is motivated by a commitment to transparency in public service. He urged aspirants with ongoing corruption-related cases to voluntarily exit the race.
"This matter concerns safeguarding the integrity of our governance. Individuals with outstanding issues should step aside to ensure a fair and credible selection process," Gwammaja added.
He asserted that the Legacy Bloc is dedicated to ensuring that Kano State secures a Deputy Governor who can withstand public scrutiny and make substantial contributions to the state's governance.
