The recent horrific killings of a housewife, Fatima Abubakar, along with her six children, including an infant, in the Dorayi Chiranchi region of Kano has rekindled alarm about the escalating crime issue in our communities, particularly among the youth.

In broad daylight, Umar Auwalu, 23, is claimed to have entered the home of his aunt with two accomplices, brutally murdering her and her children, whose ages ranged from 18 months to 17 years. Alarmingly, the neighbors remained unaware of the violent events unfolding, even as screams for help were heard from the victims.

Compounding the situation, the main suspect has reportedly admitted to murdering two of his female relatives under similar circumstances, yet no one had previously associated him with those crimes. His father has also accused him of a separate incident involving the death of his sister.

Tragically, this is not an isolated event in Kano, which has faced its fair share of such brutalities. In 2022, Shafi’u Abubakar infamously set fire to worshippers in a mosque located in Larabar Abasawa, Gezawa Local Government Area, resulting in the deaths of 23 individuals. Similarly, in 2021, teacher Abdulmalik Tanko kidnapped and killed his five-year-old pupil, Hanifa Abubakar, after demanding ransom from her family.

The state is grappling with rampant phone snatching, particularly in the capital, where perpetrators are willing to use violence against any potential resistance. This ongoing threat has instilled fear among residents, making them feel vulnerable both in public and within their homes.

For a city as significant as Kano, this situation poses a substantial obstacle to both economic and social progress. If residents feel unsafe, one can only speculate on how outsiders might perceive the environment for business or tourism.

In recent years, there has been a noticeable increase in drug involvement among the youth, fostering criminal behavior as they seek means to support their drug habits. This phenomenon is largely attributed to significant unemployment, which has left many young people idle and susceptible to manipulation by criminal organizations.

At Daily Trust, we contend that the government must intensify efforts to rectify this situation. Authorities should identify and disrupt the supply chains for illicit drugs entering the city, along with detaining and prosecuting those involved. Efforts to create more job opportunities for the idle youth must also be prioritized.

The legal system and those tasked with bringing perpetrators of such heinous acts to justice must take urgent actions to expedite proceedings. Swift resolution of these cases could serve as a deterrent to potential future offenders. Furthermore, the governor must ensure prompt execution of sentences when required.

It is promising that the Kano State Attorney General has taken the initiative to oversee the case to ensure a fair and swift legal process. The governor’s commitment to sign any death warrants post-judicial process is noteworthy, and we hope he honors this pledge.

Moreover, this situation and others like it warrant deep reflection. It has become evident that many criminals are not outsiders; in certain instances, they are individuals from within our circles. This indicates a collective responsibility to look out for one another. Parents and community members must actively monitor their surroundings. Our youth require increased support given the myriad challenges they face, and the onus falls upon those closest to them.

We must cultivate an environment of vigilance, raising alarms whenever we suspect danger. Societal survival hinges on collaborative efforts, especially in a nation characterized by fragile institutions.

Finally, we at Daily Trust extend our heartfelt condolences to the affected family, praying that they find the strength to endure this irreplaceable loss.
