A Nigerian lady, Priceless Muna Chukwunonso, has advised that it is a significant error for a newly married woman to move into her husband's family residence. She highlighted concerns about a lack of privacy, potential erosion of respect, boundary issues, and unwelcome interference as key reasons.
Chukwunonso acknowledged that not all in-laws are problematic, but she underscored the necessity for couples to develop their relationship without undue pressure or external influence.
In a Facebook post on Monday, April 6, she stated: “As a newly wed, don't ever move into your husband's family house.. It doesn't end well!!”.
She elaborated that relocating into the husband's family home is one of the most substantial mistakes a woman in Nigeria can make after marriage.
This is not necessarily because the family members are inherently bad, but because marriage requires its own dedicated space, she explained.
According to her, couples need time to understand each other, establish their unique routines and systems, and grow together without external pressures.
"Now imagine doing that with opinions, monitoring, and expectations everywhere," she posed, illustrating the challenges.
She cautioned that minor disagreements can escalate into major conflicts, boundaries can become blurred, and respect may start to diminish in such living arrangements.
While acknowledging that not every marriage in this situation will falter, she questioned the wisdom of starting a marital journey under such potential disadvantages.
