The Kano State Government has declared the immediate closure of all entertainment venues in the state in preparation for the upcoming Ramadan fasting period.
The announcement was made by Abdullahi Sulaiman, the Public Relations Officer of the Kano State Censorship Board. This directive encompasses all entertainment establishments, including gala houses and DJs operating under the board's regulatory scope.
"Starting from Wednesday, 18 February 2026, these venues will remain closed until the conclusion of the holy month of Ramadan, with the closure effective from 10:00 p.m. on that date," the statement indicated.
According to the censorship board, the initiative is designed to provide a peaceful and morally appropriate setting for Muslim faithful to observe their fast without distractions.
"The decision aims to ensure a tranquil environment for residents to adhere to the Ramadan fast as per religious guidelines," Sulaiman remarked.
He further noted that entertainment operations falling under the board's jurisdiction will be halted throughout the fasting period, with a reopening date to be announced as preparations for Eid begin.
"The closure will remain enforced during the fasting duration, and the reopening date, particularly for Eid celebrations, will be communicated timely," he added.
The board has urged affected entertainment venue operators and DJs to fully comply with the order, warning that enforcement teams will be dispatched to ensure adherence. "Monitoring teams will be established to oversee compliance, and any violations of this directive will face relevant penalties," Sulaiman cautioned.
The agency emphasized that this decision aligns with its role in overseeing entertainment activities and maintaining moral and social order during religious observances. In response to various reactions from the community, the board clarified that the order does not extend to event venues used for weddings, conferences, or political events.
Usman Dankwano, a director in the board, clarified that only venues identified strictly as entertainment outlets, like gala houses and similar recreational venues supervised by the board, are affected by this order.
"Entertainment venues such as gala houses and similar establishments under the Censorship Board's jurisdiction are included in this order," Dankwano explained. He emphasized that event centers do not fall under the board's regulatory scope. "Event centers are beyond our authority. There seems to have been a misunderstanding regarding this directive," he added.
