Governor Dikko Radda has disclosed that the Katsina State Government has paid a cumulative total of N45.8 billion in life and death gratuities to 14,560 beneficiaries since its inception.
This amount pertains to employees of the State, Local Governments, and Local Education Authorities (LEAs).
The announcement was made by the governor on Thursday in Katsina during the commencement of the ‘Last Payment of N21 billion Accrued Liability of Life and Death Gratuities’ scheduled until October 2025.
Radda emphasized that a total of N45.8 billion has been approved and allocated to benefit 14,560 recipients, which include those from the State, Local Governments, and LEAs.
He mentioned that the current administration is taking significant steps toward reforming the pension administration in the state by enacting a new contributory pension law in 2025.
“This reform aligns with global best practices, intended to enhance pension management, remove administrative hurdles, guarantee timely payment of gratuities and pensions, and restore public trust in the system,” he stated.
“Under the revised framework, the Katsina State Pension Bureau will supervise the Contributory Pension Scheme, while the existing pension system will remain under the management of the Katsina State and Local Governments Pension Transition Board until all current beneficiaries have left the system,” he added.
Radda reassured that the contributions of workers would not be overlooked, and there will be no delays in their entitlements.
“As a government, we have a clear vision – to create a pension system that is efficient, open, accountable, and responsive to retirees’ needs. We will not engage in any practices that undermine the interests of the populace,” he asserted.
Earlier, the State Head of Service, Alhaji Falalu Bawale, praised the government for disbursing such a significant sum for settling the accrued liabilities owed to retirees and those who passed away in service by October 2025.
He affirmed that the current administration would continue to prioritize the civil service as a partner in implementing various policies and programs for the citizens.
Additionally, Mr. Hussani Hamisu, the Chairman of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), expressed his appreciation for the administration's decision to release what he considered a substantial amount for the retirees.
He prayed for peace and security for the state.
