Katsina State is set to launch its first-ever mass wedding programme, with plans to formally marry at least 1,000 couples from various parts of the state as part of broader efforts to tackle societal issues.
Malam Abu-Ammar, the Director General of the Katsina State Hisbah Board, revealed during a session on livelihood support and counselling that the programme is designed to assist underprivileged individuals who face financial barriers to marriage.
"We have selected 1,000 couples, representing 2,000 individuals, from all 34 local government areas within Katsina State," stated Abu-Ammar. He elaborated that "this upcoming mass wedding is among the state government's key strategies to mitigate social vices. Many widows, orphans, and vulnerable residents find themselves unable to marry due to economic hardships."
The state government has indicated that while the specific financial outlay for the programme remains undisclosed, both the brides and grooms will receive support. This assistance is intended to include empowerment schemes and welfare packages to aid them in establishing their new lives together.
Commissioner for Women Affairs, A’isha Malumfashi, affirmed that all prospective participants have undergone thorough vetting. "Every one of the 1,000 couples has completed medical screenings and verification processes to ascertain their health status and suitability for marriage," she confirmed.
Malumfashi, whose statement was delivered by the ministry's Public Relations Officer, Aminatu Mashi, announced that the mass wedding is scheduled to occur on April 25, 2026.
The initiative is being organised through a collaborative effort involving a marital support foundation, the Hisbah Board, and the state Ministry of Women’s Affairs, all working together to enhance social welfare provisions in Katsina State.
