Kebbi State Governor, Nasir Idris, has sanctioned the disbursement of more than N715 million to support indigent students from the state who are enrolled in universities in India and Egypt.
During a press briefing in Birnin Kebbi on Thursday, the Commissioner for Higher Education, Isah Abubakar Tunga, disclosed that the funds have been allocated to the respective institutions to cover tuition fees, registration costs, and living expenses for the students.
He elaborated that a total of N177.35 million has been allocated for 28 students attending Subharti and GD Goenka universities in India, which includes payments for tuition, registration, living expenses, visa extensions, and internships.
Furthermore, the Commissioner reported that N117.7 million has been dispensed as maintenance allowances for 25 Kebbi students pursuing Medicine across seven universities in Egypt.
In addition, N70.2 million was allocated as financial aid to some Kebbi students studying Pharmacy, Medical, and Allied Sciences at Jaipur National and GD Goenka universities in India.
Additionally, N349.7 million has been earmarked for the registration, tuition, and living costs of 35 students set to depart from Nigeria for Ethiopia to study Medicine and Pharmacy, according to the commissioner’s statements.
He also mentioned that the governor approved the appointment of Dr. Muhammad Murtala Musa as the inaugural provost of the Kauran Gwandu College of Midwifery Sciences, located in Ambursa, Birnin Kebbi.
