The Kwankwasiyya Movement, comprising supporters of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) National Leader, Dr. Musa Kwankwaso, has issued a cautionary statement to the Kano State House of Assembly and the state government. The movement is advising against the ongoing impeachment proceedings targeting the Deputy Governor, Aminu Abdussalam Gwarzo, asserting that such a move could exacerbate political rifts and undermine the mandate entrusted by the people.
In a statement released on Saturday, the group's spokesperson, Dr. Habibu Saleh, characterized the impeachment process as a source of concern. He cautioned political figures in the state to refrain from actions that might be interpreted as politically motivated.
“The citizens of Kano are closely observing the developing situation, and there is a rising apprehension that the attempt to impeach might be primarily driven by political motives rather than by a genuine constitutional imperative,” Saleh stated.
He pointed out that while the constitution equips lawmakers with oversight powers, impeachment represents a significant prerogative that should not be employed for political expediency.
“Impeachment should never be debased into an instrument for resolving political disputes or reshaping political alliances. Its application must be strictly governed by principles of justice, fairness, and the welfare of the populace,” he emphasized.
Saleh reminded the state's leadership of the collective effort involving thousands of Kwankwasiyya supporters across Kano, which was instrumental in bringing the current administration to power.
He suggested that any action perceived as targeting key members of the administration risks sending a discouraging message to the supporters who invested considerable effort in achieving electoral success.
“Those in positions of authority must recall the shared struggle that paved the way for their accomplishments. Political power should never be wielded in a manner that suggests an abandonment of the partnerships and allegiances that forged the movement,” he commented.
Furthermore, he implored the members of the Kano State House of Assembly to conduct their constitutional duties with prudence and autonomy. He warned that political maneuvers perceived as vindictive could instigate undue friction within the state's political environment.
“History has demonstrated that when political power is exercised in ways that appear inequitable or retaliatory, the populace ultimately expresses its judgment through democratic channels,” he concluded.
