On Sunday, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, the former governor of Kano State and leader of the Kwankwasiyya movement, held an event at his residence in Kano to celebrate Sallah with prominent Nigerian political figures.
Guests at the event included Peter Obi, the Labour Party's presidential candidate from the 2023 elections, Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde, and former Bayelsa State Governor Seriake Dickson.
Kwankwaso announced this gathering on his official social media accounts, referring to it as part of a “joyful Sallah celebration” with the esteemed guests.
He expressed, “Delighted to host Their Excellencies, Peter Obi, Seyi Makinde, and Seriake Dickson at my Kano residence for this joyful Sallah celebration. Wishing everyone peace, blessings, and prosperity.”
This visit comes at a time when political realignments and dialogues are underway across various parties, and analysts view such significant gatherings as crucial for coalition-building ahead of future elections.
During the ‘kalankuwa’ event, conducted annually by the Kwankwasiyya movement and held at Kwankwaso’s residence, Obi remarked that the purpose of his visit was to pay Sallah respects.
He advocated for the revitalization of Kano's industrial sector, focusing on major manufacturing areas like Bompai and Sharada.
“I’m here to felicitate with you on the occasion of the Sallah and to pay my respects to our leader,” Obi told the numerous supporters who attended the event. He emphasized Kano's historical significance as a commercial and industrial center and stressed the importance of re-establishing thriving industries throughout the region.
“We want to change Kano. We want to build a new Kano. Our goal is to restore the economic strength of Kano,” he stated.
Obi specifically highlighted the need to revive industrial areas such as Bompai, Sharada Phase I and II, along with historical institutions like the Bank of the North, arguing that these revitalization efforts could stimulate economic activities and generate employment.
Nevertheless, he clarified that his participation in the event was not intended for political campaigning but rather to partake in the Sallah festivities and to honor Kwankwaso.
“Today is not about politics; it is the celebration of Sallah. May Almighty Allah bless all of you,” he said.
