Kyrsten Sinema, the former senator of the United States, has confirmed in legal documents her romantic relationship with a married man, Matthew Ammel. The senator is attempting to have a lawsuit filed by Ammel's estranged wife dismissed, arguing that the alleged incidents did not occur within the state where the suit was submitted.
The legal matter pertains to a lawsuit initiated by Heather Ammel in North Carolina in September 2025, targeting both Sinema and her former bodyguard.
In her motion to dismiss the case, Sinema revealed that her relationship with Matthew Ammel commenced in early 2024, prior to his formal separation from his spouse. The legal filing specifies that their first physical interaction happened on May 27, 2024, in Sonoma, California, with further encounters in cities including New York City, Washington, D.C., Aspen, and Phoenix over the ensuing months.
Sinema's legal strategy hinges on questions of jurisdiction; she asserts that the lawsuit is improperly filed in North Carolina since none of the reported incidents transpired in that state. Her legal representatives emphasize the importance of the locations of the alleged meetings to assess whether North Carolina courts can preside over the case. Heather Ammel's lawsuit also claims that Sinema sent intimate messages to her estranged husband while he was in North Carolina, including a selfie of herself wrapped exclusively in a towel.
However, Sinema has challenged this accusation in her legal submissions, denying the sending of such a photograph. She maintains that even if such a message were sent, she was unaware of Ammel's location in North Carolina, thereby negating any basis for legal jurisdiction in the state.
The focal point of the case now rests on whether North Carolina's courts can adjudicate the lawsuit or if it should be dismissed due to jurisdictional issues.
