Tijani Fatai, the newly appointed Commissioner of Police for Lagos State, has announced that criminals will not find sanctuary within the state as he introduced his policies focused on continuity, professionalism, and integrity.
In his inaugural speech following a handover ceremony from the former Commissioner, AIG Olorundare Moshood, Fatai expressed his commitment to building upon the security frameworks already established, incorporating proactive, intelligence-driven, and technologically advanced techniques to tackle crime effectively.
He emphasized that his leadership marks a continuation of the achievements accomplished under the previous administration.
"Having been part of the former administration for nearly three-quarters of its term, I believe I played a role in its successes. This isn’t a completely new endeavor; it’s more of an evolution with a forward-thinking mindset," Fatai remarked.
"The Command will not only maintain but will enhance the current security architecture and operational techniques which are in place. Given that Lagos is Nigeria’s economic powerhouse and a significant mega city in sub-Saharan Africa transitioning to a smart city, it faces unique and intricate security challenges.
"We recognize that a secure environment is essential for economic development and public trust, and we are ready to face these challenges directly. The Lagos State Police Command is committed to safeguarding lives and property. We will implement proactive, intelligence-driven, technology-oriented, and community-focused policing strategies to effectively manage security concerns statewide.
"Criminals and lawbreakers will have no refuge in Lagos. We will enhance community engagement as a fundamental aspect of our policing philosophy. Our aim is to foster trust, improve collaboration, and encourage residents to view the Police as their partners in development."
Fatai outlined that the Command intends to focus on community-oriented policing, engage youth actively, and collaborate closely with the media as fundamental pillars of its security approach.
He further highlighted the importance of inter-agency collaboration, indicating that the Police would work alongside military and other security bodies to improve intelligence sharing and coordinated operations.
In addressing officers under his command, he stressed that discipline, professionalism, and integrity are imperative, stating there would be zero tolerance for police brutality and unprofessional behavior.
"All operations will adhere to legal standards and respect for human rights. Any officer found to be in violation will face disciplinary measures as per existing laws," he assured, emphasizing that the welfare and training of personnel would be prioritized.
Fatai noted the Command’s operational priorities would include intensifying efforts to reduce crime, combat cultism and violent crimes, enhance traffic regulation, improve policing visibility, and restore peace in areas identified as hotspots.
He expressed confidence in his grasp of the local policing context and his capability to confront emerging challenges head-on.
"I have a strong understanding of the landscape and specific policing dynamics within Lagos. I know the types of interventions needed to address issues as they surface, and I assure residents that we will work to keep crime to an absolute minimum," he stated.
Fatai also encouraged the public to utilize available channels for reporting misconduct and rights violations, assuring that responses would be prompt and accountable.
"Citizens are invited to report any complaints or rights infringements through the Complaint Response Unit by calling 09111111150 or via WhatsApp at 09111111151, contacting the Public Relations Office, or visiting the nearest police station. We guarantee an immediate and effective response. If you notice something, speak up. Security is a shared responsibility.
"I assure the Lagos State government and residents that under my leadership, the Command will remain dedicated, responsive, and accountable," he concluded.
