The Lagos State Government has announced it is investigating the reported death of a socialite identified as Elena Jessica, which occurred after she underwent cosmetic surgery.

Reports indicate that Elena allegedly died following a Brazilian Butt Lift (BBL) procedure performed at a local clinic.

The Health Facilities Monitoring and Accreditation Agency (HEFAMAA) is carrying out the investigation, as it is the regulatory authority in Lagos responsible for the oversight of health facilities.

Dr. Abiola Idowu, the Permanent Secretary of HEFAMAA, disclosed this information in a statement released on Thursday, March 12, 2026. The investigation was prompted by social media reports claiming that Elena experienced complications as a result of the procedure.

While the clinic involved is registered with HEFAMAA, officials emphasized that such registration does not exempt facilities from scrutiny in cases where patient safety is compromised.

The statement also noted that aesthetic and cosmetic surgery procedures in Lagos are bound by specific regulations that outline facility requirements, the qualifications of practitioners, and measures to ensure patient safety.

HEFAMAA has initiated a thorough review of the incident to assess whether the clinic and its medical staff followed the established regulatory standards.

The agency has also encouraged residents considering cosmetic procedures to engage only qualified medical practitioners and accredited health facilities.

The statement read, "The Lagos State Government, through HEFAMAA, is undertaking a full investigation into the reported death of a socialite known as Elena, who allegedly died following a Brazilian Butt Lift (BBL) cosmetic procedure at a state clinic."

It continued: "This investigation arises from social media reports suggesting that the young woman developed complications during or shortly after the surgery.

"While we are still verifying the details of this incident, the State Government assures the public that a comprehensive, professional, and transparent investigation is underway to determine the events leading to this tragic occurrence."

Preliminary findings suggest that the facility where the surgery occurred is registered with HEFAMAA.

"However," the statement noted, "registration does not exempt any facility from examination, particularly in cases related to patient safety."

HEFAMAA, as the regulatory body in charge of monitoring, licensing, and accrediting healthcare facilities, guarantees that all institutions adhere to operational standards, professional guidelines, and patient safety protocols.

The agency reiterated that aesthetic and cosmetic procedures must comply with well-defined regulatory standards, covering aspects such as facility infrastructure, qualifications of practitioners, infection control, patient consent, anaesthetic safety, and emergency protocols.

Consequently, HEFAMAA has begun an in-depth review of the situation, examining compliance with regulatory requirements, verifying the credentials of the involved healthcare professionals, and evaluating the quality of care provided to the patient before, during, and after the surgery.

Members of the public are urged to maintain calm and refrain from disseminating unverified or speculative information that could potentially interfere with the investigation.

Furthermore, the Lagos State Government advises residents to undertake due diligence when seeking cosmetic or aesthetic procedures, ensuring they seek services only from accredited facilities and qualified medical professionals with the required expertise.

The Government is steadfast in its commitment to safeguarding the health and welfare of residents through enhanced regulatory oversight, continuous monitoring of healthcare services, and strict adherence to healthcare standards across the State.

Updates will be provided as the investigation progresses.
