LALIGA’s initiative to strengthen its presence in Nigeria was prominently showcased at a recent gathering in Lagos, where senior executives, policymakers, and key industry figures convened for the LALIGA Talks and Tapas event. This high-profile networking and cultural forum framed football as a medium for business development, governance, and long-term value creation.

This exclusive, invite-only event represented a transition from fan engagement initiatives to direct interactions in corporate settings. It brought together top executives and institutional stakeholders to examine the intersections of football with law, commerce, culture, and youth development. The forum also underscored Nigeria’s ascending significance within LALIGA’s overall strategy in Africa, recognizing the country not just as a crucial broadcasting market, but also as a fertile ground for structured alliances and initiatives focused on social impact.

At the event, Tresor Penku, the Managing Director of LALIGA in Africa, articulated that the initiative aims to encourage partners to appreciate the league in a more profound manner beyond mere match spectacles. He highlighted that Talks and Tapas fosters an environment where industry leaders can engage with the LALIGA brand through meaningful dialogue, cultural both exchange and collective experiences related to the league’s clubs, cities, and identity.

Penku pointed out that Lagos was chosen for the Nigerian edition due to the country’s vast population, youthful demographics, and vibrant digital interactions. He reiterated that LALIGA’s ambitions in Africa include broadcast services, commercial collaborations, club support, and talent cultivation, all of which are rooted in enhancing fan engagement.

He noted that Nigeria has emerged as one of LALIGA’s most dynamic markets on the continent, boasting a rapidly growing digital audience alongside significant television viewership. With over 190,000 registered Nigerian fans on its platforms and millions more interacting on social media, Penku described Nigeria as a dual opportunity for consumption and football talent development.

The focus on nurturing talent was a significant theme at the event, with LALIGA conducting its draft program in collaboration with EA Sports, scouting promising young footballers for opportunities in Spain, including matches against youth teams affiliated with elite clubs.

From a commercial standpoint, Jorge Gazapo Diaz, LALIGA’s Head of Commercial in Africa, expressed that the league’s growth strategies must harmonize commercial viability with community impact. He remarked that in Nigeria, football holds substantial cultural significance beyond entertainment, necessitating that initiatives resonate with local audiences while maintaining commercial success.

Gazapo stated, "Our initiatives need to be both economically robust and community-focused," emphasizing Nigeria's crucial role given its demographic factors, scale, and cultural ties to football. He noted that programs like NextGen are tailored to be ongoing, following a successful initial rollout in South Africa.

The Lagos event was held in collaboration with Olaniwun Ajayi LP, highlighting the legal and governance facets of football's expanding business landscape. Olatoyosi Alabi, a partner at Olaniwun Ajayi LP, asserted that well- established brands emerge through effective strategy, organizational structure, and sound governance, indicating that Talks and Tapas was intentionally crafted to explore the commercial, legal, and governance structures that shape contemporary football.

Alabi added that the partnership with LALIGA and Legacy Sports aimed to engage brands in discussions concerning value generation, protection, and sustainable partnerships, especially as international sports entities seek to deepen their presence in African markets.

The forum attracted government officials and investors, including representatives from Abia State, who engaged in discussions about how global football development models could be adapted to fit local contexts. Also in attendance was Desmond Chiji, the LALIGA Delegate Global Network and Country Manager for Nigeria and Ghana, whose contributions have been instrumental in expanding the league's influence throughout the region.
