Media Trust Group, which owns Daily Trust, Weekend Trust, Aminiya, Trust TV, and Trust Radio, has introduced Project Evolution, a Digital Newsroom dedicated to enhancing quality and independent journalism.
The AI-powered newsroom was officially launched on Wednesday at the organization’s corporate headquarters located in Abuja.
During the event, Malam Ahmed Shekarau, the Group Chief Executive Officer (GCEO), praised the board for their commitment to realizing a vision that dates back to 2006.
He acknowledged the board's ongoing efforts and highlighted their determination by the appointment of Malam Naziru Mikail as Executive Director, Digital Operations in 2019, which further propelled the initiative.
Following this key appointment, the board directed the acquisition of a globally respected consulting firm to ensure the project's success.
Malam Shekarau expressed gratitude towards Mikail, who is currently pursuing his PhD in the UK, for his invaluable contributions to the project and thanked the London-based Innovation Media Consulting Group for their collaborative efforts towards achieving this milestone.
Addressing the staff, he stated, “This converged newsroom is intended to enhance journalism in Nigeria and the African continent. I encourage everyone to make full use of the newsroom so that it can assist us in delivering our work effectively.”
Malam Abdullahi Waida Maida, a member of the Board of Directors overseeing the Monitoring and Evaluation Committee of Project Evolution, expressed his joy that the initiative has come to fruition. He thanked the staff for their dedication to the company's growth and assured them of the board's unwavering support for the project.
He affirmed, “The Digital Converged Newsroom represents a significant development, and you can count on our support to ensure its success.”
Malam Ibrahim Shehu, the Editorial Director and a key advocate for the project, noted that this newsroom stands as the first of its kind in West Africa.
“I believe there are no other examples in West Africa where television, radio, newspapers, and digital platforms are unified in one newsroom,” he stated, mentioning that the various departments have been integrated seamlessly to ensure swift and accurate reporting.
The newsroom is equipped with cutting-edge tools designed to compete with globally recognized media houses.
Juan Senor, the President of Innovation Media Consulting Group, congratulated Media Trust Group for their commitment to advancing this groundbreaking project.
He remarked, “Today marks not just the launch of a newsroom but the beginning of a novel perspective on journalism in Nigeria, and arguably in West Africa. Our objective in collaborating with Daily Trust was not merely about operational processes or cultural shifts, but rather about embracing a purpose.
He challenged the team with questions on how to construct a newsroom suited for contemporary journalism, which demands both speed and depth. He advocated for a digital-first approach, emphasizing that the physical spaces, such as desks and screens, are crafted to promote transparency and rigorous editorial standards.
As Malam Kabiru Yusuf, the Chairman of Media Trust Group, launched the newsroom, he reminisced about the organization’s beginnings nearly 25 years ago.
He reflected on the significant advancements made, now witnessing new talent within the newsroom, many of whom he has not yet met, implying a successful generational transition within the company.
Malam Yusuf expressed optimism for the ongoing journey, emphasizing their original aspirations and the achievements thus far, promising continued progress into the future.
