Leicester City, former Premier League title winners, has been penalized with a six-point deduction after being found guilty of breaching the EFL's profit and sustainability guidelines for the current season.
The independent commission that investigated the case recommended the penalty, which was approved by the EFL board earlier this week. This setback has dropped Leicester from 17th to 20th place, placing them dangerously close to relegation.
Currently, the Foxes are without a head coach, having terminated Marti Cifuentes's contract last month.
The commission was established under Premier League regulations in May, following an arbitration ruling that allowed the Premier League to investigate potential breaches of EFL regulations after Leicester's promotion to Premier League in 2024.
The investigation revealed that the club exceeded the allowable profit and sustainability threshold by £20.8 million during the assessment period ending in 2023/24.
Additionally, the commission identified that Leicester failed to submit their annual financial accounts to the Premier League as required.
