Lilian Afegbai has extended an apology for her recent social media commentary directed at the Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards (AMVCA) organisers.
The Nigerian actress and film producer shared her remorse across her social media platforms, admitting that her previous tweet was inappropriate and lacked justification.
Afegbai stated, "This apology should have come earlier. That tweet should not have happened. No excuse. It was disrespectful to AMVCA, the nominees, my To Kill A Monkey family, and all of you who have supported me."
She further explained that while she felt disappointed, her reaction was still not a valid justification for her behaviour.
"Honestly, I was disappointed. But that’s not an excuse for how I responded. I’ve come a long way in my journey, and for a long time I felt invisible. To Kill A Monkey felt like my ‘now they see me’ moment, and I held on to that very tightly."
The actress admitted that her failure to receive a nomination resulted in a reaction stemming from hurt and a sense of entitlement, which she described as being out of character.
"When I wasn’t nominated, I reacted from a place of hurt, entitlement and it was out of character for me. I was wrong and I am sorry. Please give me a chance to be better. I no go fall una hand again."
This apology follows days after Afegbai expressed her strong disapproval on social media when the nominations for this year's AMVCA were revealed, and her film was not included.
Initially, she had posted, "AMVCA SMH."
In a subsequent post, she added, "I always choose to believe everything happens for a reason. I don’t need a nomination for validation. The truth is clear: Nobody trended like Idia from TKAM last year. Her acting was 100. You guys can eat your award."
