A suspect has been detained following an incident where a Molotov cocktail was thrown at the San Francisco residence of Sam Altman, the chief executive of OpenAI. This event has heightened security concerns surrounding the artificial intelligence firm and its leadership.
The San Francisco Police Department reported that a 20-year-old man deployed an incendiary device at approximately 4:00 a.m., igniting one of the exterior gates of Altman's home before fleeing the scene on foot.
According to law enforcement, the same individual proceeded towards OpenAI's premises, where he allegedly threatened to set the building on fire. Police responded promptly and took the suspect into custody. The department indicated that charges are pending and the investigation is ongoing.
OpenAI acknowledged the attack, confirming that no individuals sustained injuries and commending the swift actions of the police. A company representative stated, "We deeply appreciate how quickly SFPD responded and the support from the city in helping keep our employees safe. The individual is in custody, and we’re assisting law enforcement with their investigation."
This incident follows a pattern of security events affecting the company. In November, OpenAI's headquarters experienced a lockdown after an individual made threats to commit violence at several of its San Francisco locations.
Earlier in the year, protests were also held outside the company's Mission Bay offices, reflecting increased public scrutiny of the AI firm's operations.
Sam Altman addressed the attack in a personal blog post, sharing a picture of his family and expressing a hope that it might deter further hostile actions. He also referenced a recent article that he felt may have influenced public perception, stating, "Now I am awake in the middle of the night and pissed, and thinking that I have underestimated the power of words and narratives. This seems like as good of a time as any to address a few things."
Reflecting on his position within the rapidly evolving AI sector, Altman added, "I am a flawed person in the center of an exceptionally complex situation, trying to get a little better each year, always working for the mission."
