A man was arrested on Tuesday after he sprayed Democratic U.S. Representative Ilhan Omar with a noxious liquid during a town hall meeting in Minneapolis, where she was expressing her criticism of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement policies in Minnesota.

Omar did not suffer any injuries from the incident. A security guard quickly intervened, restraining the attacker and bringing him to the ground, as reported by a Reuters witness and captured in video footage from the event.

Authorities indicated that the suspect is being held on charges of third- degree assault.

During her speech, Omar was denouncing the actions of ICE and Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem, calling for Noem’s resignation after the shooting deaths of two American citizens in Minneapolis correlated with increased immigration enforcement.

"ICE cannot be reformed or rehabilitated; it must be abolished, and DHS Secretary Kristi Noem should resign or face impeachment," Omar asserted, receiving applause from attendees.

Shortly afterward, an individual in the front row approached her and discharged the contents of a syringe toward her, stating, "You must resign."

In response, Omar stepped forward with her hand raised before security personnel restrained the attacker.

After a brief pause, Omar resumed her address, despite her associates urging her to seek medical attention; she insisted she only required a napkin. Her office later confirmed she was unharmed.

Forensic experts collected evidence from the site, as the police noted.

Witness accounts describe the liquid as having a smell reminiscent of ammonia, which caused minor throat irritation.

“I learned early not to yield to threats,” Omar remarked to the audience, emphasizing her commitment to continue despite the attack. “You confront such challenges boldly.”

Omar has been a frequent target for public remarks and social media attacks by President Donald Trump, who has made disparaging comments regarding her Somali heritage.
