Armed police have surrounded a tower block in Edinburgh, Scotland, following reports of a man using a knife to stab multiple people.

Two individuals have been hospitalized as a result of the attack, and the suspect has allegedly fortified himself within the premises.

Witnesses reported seeing the suspect looking out of a window and reacting with a smile towards bystanders on the ground.

Footage appears to capture a man wielding two large knives as law enforcement arrived at the scene.

Authorities confirmed that two people sustained injuries during the incident.

In response to the situation, Wester Hailes High School, located nearby, was placed on lockdown.

An emergency response team has been engaged since around 9 AM.

One eyewitness recounted to The Scottish Sun, "He was in the back of our building. We stepped outside, and this guy was running around brandishing two knives in the grassy area behind. He approached us before heading towards the tall flats. It was terrifying; I had never seen him before. The two blades were red, indicating he might have seriously hurt someone. We closed the café earlier but have since reopened. The police seem to have things under control now, but at that moment, it felt chaotic. It hasn’t been an ordinary Monday in this area."

William Ramsay, a local resident, conveyed his belief that the armed man had entered the stairwell of his building. He described, "He broke into the local shop and possibly stabbed two people, though I cannot confirm it. Armed police and dogs have been present for around two hours now."

Chief Inspector Scott Kennedy stated, "The earlier disturbance in the Calder area is now secured, and there is no believed threat to the general public. This incident is not considered to be terror-related."

"Officers were alerted about a person with a bladed weapon on Calder Gardens around 8:25 AM. Specialised units, including armed officers, are present at a nearby location, and investigations are ongoing. Two individuals were injured and transported to the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh for medical care."

He added, "I recognise that this has been a distressing occurrence for the community. I want to assure the residents that police will continue to patrol the area as inquiries proceed."
