A 35-year-old man, Mohammed Sani, has been ordered to be held in a correctional facility by a Federal High Court in Kaduna, following accusations of possessing 15.6kg of cannabis sativa. The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), specifically its Kaduna State Command, presented a single charge of unlawful possession of cannabis against the defendant, who entered a plea of not guilty.
Justice Amina Shuaibu mandated Sani's remand and scheduled the next court session for April 30 for the commencement of the trial.
Prior to the proceedings, the prosecution lawyer, Ocholi David, informed the court that the alleged offence occurred on April 5 in the Abakwa area of Kaduna State. He stated that NDLEA operatives had received information regarding the defendant's possession of a substantial quantity of cannabis, which he was reportedly distributing. The operatives subsequently apprehended Sani with the 15.6kg of the prohibited substance. The prosecution indicated that the alleged act is in contravention of Section 11(b) of the NDLEA Act, Cap N30, Laws of the Federation 2004.
