A man was detained in Houston, Texas, following accusations of confining his disabled wife to a bedroom in their luxury home for a duration of five years, allegedly giving her only "1 egg" daily to eat.
Court documents acquired by Law&Crime; indicate that 46-year-old James Earl Johnson was apprehended on March 6, 2026, when his wife, also 46, dialed 911 to report that he had restricted her movement and deprived her of phone access for five years.
The victim managed to contact law enforcement when Johnson left a phone on a nightstand within reach on that day.
Reports reveal that the woman had minimal to no communication with the outside world during her confinement prior to her emergency call, according to court filings.
During the 911 call, it is alleged that Johnson physically assaulted his wife and forced her back to bed before terminating the conversation.
Authorities confirmed that the woman was disabled, although they did not specify the nature of her disability.
For the length of their marriage, Johnson is said to have starved his wife, providing her with just a single egg and a small dinner each day. In addition, he allegedly neglected to offer her any necessary medical care throughout the five years.
The woman's son told local news outlet KTRK that she remained hospitalized a few days after being rescued, but he refrained from disclosing details about her injuries or the specifics of her disability.
According to reports, the property where the couple and their children lived has an estimated value exceeding $1 million.
Authorities had previously been summoned to their residence in November 2025; however, the victim informed responding officers at that time that she and her children were instructed not to speak with the police, KTRK noted.
As a result of these allegations, Johnson has been charged with injury to a disabled individual and abandoning or endangering a disabled individual.
