Extensive property valued in the billions of naira has been lost due to separate fire incidents at Tejuosho Market and the Aluminum Village in Dopemu, Lagos.
The early Saturday morning events impacted a three-story commercial building in Yaba and numerous shops and offices within the Aluminum Village, situated along the Abeokuta Expressway in Agege.
Witness accounts suggest the fires spread with alarming speed, exacerbated by the presence of flammable materials and the close proximity of the structures.
"I was jolted awake by fierce flames. I tried to go out and help others fight the fire, but it was already too intense," shared Mrs. Abosede, a local resident.
The Controller-General of the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, Margaret Adeseye, confirmed both incidents, highlighting the swift response of emergency personnel to contain the infernos.
She stated that the first fire affected several offices and shops in a large commercial complex within the Aluminum Village in Dopemu. Firefighters from Ikeja and Agege stations were dispatched and successfully brought the situation under control.
Adeseye also reported that a second fire broke out at approximately 3:15 a.m. in a three-story building on Oyabiyi Street, opposite the Nigeria Labour Congress office in Tejuosho, Yaba.
"The building, which housed numerous shops filled with textile goods, was completely consumed by the fire," she noted.
She further explained that firefighters from Somolu, Ilupeju, and Sari Iganmu stations were mobilised and managed to contain the blaze, preventing its spread to adjacent properties.
The fire service chief commended the efforts of the emergency teams, stating that both fires were controlled without any reported injuries or fatalities.
However, she stressed the critical importance of adhering to fire safety protocols, especially in commercial zones where combustible materials are stored.
Investigations are currently underway to ascertain the exact causes of these separate fire incidents.
