Michael B. Jordan has made history by winning the Academy Award for Best Actor for portraying twin brothers Stack and Smoke in the film 'Sinners', under the direction of Ryan Coogler.
During his acceptance remarks, Jordan conveyed his heartfelt appreciation and shared a moment of reflection, stating, “God is good.” He also expressed gratitude to Coogler for his artistic direction and for “believing in the culture.”
He lauded the director for affording him the chance to bring depth to his roles, saying, “You’re an amazing, amazing person. I’m deeply honored to consider you both a collaborator and a friend. Thank you for allowing me the space to shine. Much love to you, brother.”
'Sinners' gained a remarkable 16 nominations, ultimately securing four Oscars, including Best Original Screenplay for Coogler and Best Cinematography for Autumn Durald Arkapaw. Arkapaw made history as the first woman to win in the cinematography category and is also the first individual of African American or Filipino heritage to achieve this award.
Set in 1932 Mississippi, the vampire-themed film delves into the dynamics of Black culture and endurance amid the Jim Crow era. It is a collaborative effort led by Coogler, alongside his wife Zinzi Coogler, and their long- standing associate Sev Ohanian.
Jordan and Coogler's professional partnership dates back to 2013 with 'Fruitvale Station', where Jordan portrayed Oscar Grant, who was fatally shot by a BART police officer in 2009. They later collaborated on the 'Black Panther' series before coming together once more for 'Sinners'.
With this accolade, Jordan joins the ranks of only five other Black actors who have won an Oscar for Best Actor: Sidney Poitier, Denzel Washington, Jamie Foxx, Forest Whitaker, and Will Smith. Meanwhile, Halle Berry remains the sole Black woman to have received the award for Best Actress.
During the ceremony, 'Sinners' also clinched the Best Original Screenplay award, marking the second occasion a Black writer has achieved this honor, following Jordan Peele's win for 'Get Out' in 2017.
When Coogler took to the stage, he light-heartedly remarked, “Please sit down as I’m quite nervous, and they might cut me off.” He reflected on his roots in Oakland and Richmond, California, encouraging further conversation.
Cheers erupted from the audience when Arkapaw was named the winner for Best Cinematography for 'Sinners'. In her acceptance speech, she referred to Coogler as an “honorable person,” and shared her gratitude for the support from women throughout the campaign. “I have felt an outpouring of love from all the women involved and have had the privilege to meet so many incredible individuals,” she noted. “Achievements like this happen because of you.”
Additionally, composer Ludwig Göransson received the Oscar for Best Original Score for 'Sinners'. He praised Coogler as one of the “greatest storytellers of our time,” marking his second Oscar win for a collaboration with the director, following his 2019 success for 'Black Panther'.
