The Nigerian military has affirmed that an investigation concerning 16 detained personnel has identified several officers in relation to a purported coup attempt against the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
This confirmation follows the completion of inquiries into accusations of indiscipline and violations of military conduct associated with these officers. The military stated that those with significant evidence against them will face a military trial conducted by a judicial panel in accordance with current military law.
A statement titled “Update on Disciplinary Cases Involving Sixteen Officers Investigated for Indiscipline, Breach of Service Regulations,” released by Major General Samaila Uba, the Director of Defence Information, indicated that the investigations have concluded and the final report has been forwarded to higher authorities for additional action.
Major General Uba recalled that in October 2025, the Defence Headquarters announced the apprehension of these 16 officers due to allegations of disciplinary infractions and breaches of military codes.
“The Armed Forces of Nigeria (AFN) wishes to inform the general public that the investigations have been finalized, and the report is now with the relevant higher authorities for further proceedings, as per established military protocols,” the statement outlined.
He detailed that the investigation followed strict military procedures, carefully assessing both the officers' conduct and the context surrounding the alleged coup.
According to him, the investigation revealed that multiple officers were involved in actions aimed at disrupting the government, actions deemed contrary to the morals, ethics, and professional standards upheld by the Armed Forces.
He emphasized that those found guilty will undergo trial by a military panel in line with the Armed Forces Act and relevant legislative frameworks, assuring that principles of fairness and due process will be maintained during the proceedings.
The military further conveyed that these disciplinary actions are part of ongoing efforts to maintain institutional integrity and operational efficiency.
“In alignment with AFN’s core values, the procedures currently being enacted are intended to enhance discipline and preserve the operational capability of the force,” Uba stated.
He reiterated that the Armed Forces are dedicated to professionalism, allegiance, and respect for Nigeria's constitutional framework, highlighting that upholding constitutional authority is crucial for sustaining national order.
In previous statements, the military had refuted claims of a coup plot, clarifying that the detained personnel were solely under investigation for disobedience and service regulations violations.
Acting Director of Defence Information at the time, Brigadier General Tukur Gusau, characterized the investigation as a standard internal protocol to ensure discipline and professionalism within the ranks, assuring that the findings would be publicized once the investigation concluded.
