According to US officials, Iran has directed missiles at the Diego Garcia military installation, highlighting the rising tensions in the area.
Reports indicate that two intermediate-range ballistic missiles were launched towards the base, situated in the Chagos Islands, but neither missile reached its intended target. One was intercepted by a US warship, while the other malfunctioned during its flight.
The UK Ministry of Defence decried the episode, branding it a threat to British interests and allies. They confirmed that military assets, including RAF aircraft, are actively engaged in safeguarding personnel in the vicinity.
This incident follows the UK granting the United States restricted access to utilize British bases, including Diego Garcia, for defensive operations related to the ongoing conflict in the Middle East.
In a strong response, Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi declared Tehran would assert its right to defend itself and criticized the UK's involvement.
Diego Garcia, located about 2,300 miles from Iran, serves as a significant military base for both UK and US forces, equipped to support long-range bombers, naval operations, and logistics throughout the Middle East.
The missile launch is part of a larger trend of escalating violence targeting energy infrastructure and shipping routes, especially near the Strait of Hormuz, raising worries about regional stability and global energy supplies.
Officials from the UK have reiterated their commitment to coordination with allies, stressing that British activities remain focused on defensive operations as tensions in diplomacy and military affairs deepen.
