A girl who disappeared from an Arizona town has been found alive 32 years after she went missing.

Christina Marie Plante was reported missing from Star Valley in May 1994, when she was only 13 years old. She was last seen leaving her residence to walk to the stable where her horse was kept, after which she vanished without leaving any trace.

Her disappearance was immediately classified as occurring under "endangered and suspicious circumstances," prompting a large-scale search operation. Volunteers and police officers extensively searched the area, but despite "exhaustive ground searches, interviews, and investigative follow-up, no viable leads were developed," according to the sheriff's office.

Missing person posters circulated throughout the state and across the country showed her last known attire: a white T-shirt, multicoloured shorts, and black tennis shoes. Her details were also added to national missing children databases, but the case eventually went cold.

However, the investigation was never officially closed. Investigators continued to periodically review the evidence and pursue any potential new leads. The case was eventually assigned to the Gila County Sheriff’s Office Cold Case Unit.

The sheriff's office stated that the establishment of the specialized cold case unit "marked a renewed commitment to unresolved investigations." Through the application of modern technology and advanced investigative techniques, detectives "developed new leads that ultimately led to a breakthrough."

Now, more than three decades after her disappearance, the sheriff's office has confirmed that Christina has been found alive. Investigators have "confirmed her identity, and her status as a missing person has been officially resolved."

The sheriff's office further stated that "out of respect for Christina’s privacy and well-being, additional details will not be released at this time." A statement added that "The Gila County Sheriff’s Office remains committed to pursuing all unresolved cases and encourages anyone with information regarding other cold cases to come forward."
