Sir: The frequent occurrences of fire outbreaks causing destruction in Nigeria's prominent markets warrant a detailed scrutiny aimed at establishing effective and enduring methods to avert such incidents.

In Nigeria, carelessness appears to be an unspoken norm, as no substantial actions are taken to avert disasters; instead, efforts to address issues are often made only after the damage has been done. The government typically falls short of fulfilling its responsibilities, often making grand claims of accomplishments that, for the most part, exist only on paper.

Unfortunately, excessive negligence on both individual and corporate levels continues to result in countless preventable fatalities across the country.

Firstly, fire services should be established in all major markets, adequately equipped, and on standby at all times to promptly respond to any outbreaks occurring nearby.

Moreover, there should be a designated cut-off point for electricity in every marketplace, allowing for a systematic shutdown at a specified time each evening to prevent sparks that could trigger fires. Many fire incidents arise due to the neglect of just one trader who forgot to turn off electrical appliances before closing their shop, illustrating how one person's oversight can lead to widespread tragedy.

Additionally, market pathways need to be clearly marked to ensure they remain accessible at all times. The government must enforce a prohibition on the display of goods on roads, as this often leads to severe congestion and impedes quick response efforts during emergencies.

Access to all areas of the markets must be guaranteed to ensure no obstructions in the event of emergencies, such as fire outbreaks. If the aforementioned measures are acknowledged and implemented comprehensively, they can significantly mitigate the problem of fire outbreaks, thus preserving lives and property in Nigeria.
