MTV Shuga’s latest short film, ‘Let’s Be Honest,’ dives into the journey of a teenager on the quest for answers about sex and relationships, especially when her family is silent on such topics. It presents a relatable dialogue on choice and familial connection in an engaging manner that resonates with viewers.
The plot centers on 16-year-old Anita, who is determined to make a significant decision about her relationship with her boyfriend, Tobi. Lacking support from her parents, she seeks advice from friends, leading her to purchase contraceptives. However, a sudden confrontation with her mother disrupts her plans and reveals buried emotions and untold stories that define their relationship—bringing forth her mother’s struggles and decisions from the past. This pivotal moment leads to a more genuine and revealing conversation between them.
Despite addressing serious subjects, the film manages to maintain a light- hearted tone that makes it enjoyable. Strong performances by Hilda Egbuna, Uche Chika, and Chioma Edak provide a good balance of humor alongside the intense moments, demonstrating how laughter can facilitate tough conversations, especially about topics that are often shied away from.
‘Let’s Be Honest’ stems from the MTV Shuga Shorts Innovation Lab, aimed at empowering young filmmakers to tell socially relevant stories through short films. At just under 18 minutes long, the film focuses on a personal narrative that many viewers can relate to while maintaining clarity and depth.
