The Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) has reiterated its commitment to advancing the Blue Economy as a crucial approach for fostering sustainable development and prosperity in the region, alongside international collaboration.
This declaration was made by the NDDC's Managing Director, Dr. Samuel Ogbuku, during a meeting with former Tunisian Prime Minister, Mr. Mehdi Jomaa, held at the NDDC Guest House in Maitama, Abuja.
A statement released by Seledi Thompson-Wakama, the Director of Corporate Affairs, indicated that the visit was aligned with preparations for the upcoming Niger Delta Blue Economy Investment Summit 2026, which is set to occur in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State.
Jomaa, accompanied by his team, was warmly welcomed by Ogbuku and other key officials, including the Executive Director of Corporate Services, Mr. Ifedayo Abegunde, and the Director of the Abuja Liaison Office, Mrs. Mary Nwaeke.
During their discussion, Ogbuku emphasized the Blue Economy as a fundamental element of the Commission’s development agenda. He highlighted the significant prospects for job creation, youth empowerment, environmental sustainability, and economic advancement offered by the extensive coastal and marine resources in the Niger Delta.
He pointed out that the forthcoming Blue Economy Investment Summit aims to attract investments, promote exemplary practices, and position the Niger Delta as a leading destination for sustainable marine and coastal development.
Ogbuku further stressed that advancing in the Blue Economy requires robust institutions, accountable leadership, and collaborative efforts among governments, development partners, investors, and local communities.
Additionally, Ogbuku shared insights with Jomaa about the NDDC’s objectives and ongoing projects related to the Blue Economy. These encompass infrastructure development, sustainability programs, youth initiatives, and community-centered projects.
In his comments, Jomaa praised the NDDC’s blue economy initiative, drawing parallels with Tunisia’s Mediterranean experiences to underline the significance of careful planning, environmental care, and regional cooperation in utilizing marine resources for sustainable development.
He remarked that this interaction provided an excellent platform for high- level dialogue regarding governance in the blue economy and enhancing African cooperation, with a focus on unlocking the economic potential of marine and coastal resources.
Both parties concurred that Africa's future economic progress will increasingly hinge on the effective management of its marine and coastal assets.
