Mojtaba Khamenei, the newly established supreme leader of Iran, reportedly escaped an assassination attempt orchestrated by Israel, which resulted in the death of his father, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. According to reports, Khamenei stepped out into the garden just moments before the attack on February 28, intending to take a brief walk.
Leaked audio recordings from a discussion about the strike revealed that Mojtaba was present with his father in Tehran when he left to 'attend to something.'
The recordings also disclosed horrifying accounts of the missile strike, which devastated the area, obliterating Iran's military chief to the point that identification was based on just 'a few kilos of flesh.' Additionally, the body of Ayatollah Khamenei’s son-in-law was reported to have been found with severe injuries.
When Mojtaba stepped away from his father, Israeli Blue Sparrow ballistic missiles targeted the compound, resulting in the fatalities of Khamenei, numerous high-ranking officers, and family members while allowing Mojtaba to survive.
In a private meeting on March 12, Mazaher Hosseini, Khamenei’s protocol head, was quoted saying that it was 'God’s will' for Mojtaba to be outside at that critical moment. "He was outside and was heading upstairs when they hit the building with a missile. His wife, Ms. Haddad, was instantly martyred,” Hosseini explained.
Hosseini further reported that Mojtaba sustained only a 'minor injury to his leg,' reinforcing earlier news regarding the condition of the new supreme leader.
In his briefing to senior Iranian officials and commanders of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), Hosseini confirmed the use of at least three missiles in the assault on Khamenei's residence. One missile struck directly where Khamenei was located, another targeted Mojtaba's apartment on an upper level, while a third hit the residence of his brother-in-law, report the leaked conversations.
Hosseini described the force of the attack, mentioning that the missiles were so powerful that they traveled downstairs to where the brother-in-law was, severely injuring him. “The missiles struck in a manner that cut his head in half,” he said.
Mostafa Khamenei, the eldest son of Khamenei, was said to have survived the missile strike along with his wife, exiting the area without injuries.
Hosseini offered unsettling details about the aftermath of the assault, particularly regarding the body of Iran’s military head, Mohammad Shirazi, who was decimated in the blast. “He was blown to pieces; they found practically nothing but a few kilos of flesh to identify him,” Hosseini stated.
The emergence of this audio occurs as speculation concerning Mojtaba’s health grows, especially since he has not been seen since the outbreak of conflict. Some rumors suggest that he may be in worse condition than the Iranian state has disclosed, with former President Trump even raising doubts about his survival.
“A lot of people are saying that he’s badly disfigured. They're claiming he lost one leg, and he’s suffered severe injuries. Others question if he’s alive,” Trump remarked to the press on Monday. "We haven’t seen him at all,” Trump added, stating that U.S. officials are uncertain about his status due to the lack of public sightings, which he described as unusual.
