Superstar footballer Neymar has acknowledged that the year 2026 could be his last as a professional player.

The ex-PSG forward, recognized as a teenage sensation in Brazil before his major transfer to Barcelona, reached a new milestone this month when he celebrated his 34th birthday.

Unfortunately, his thirties have been marred by injuries, including issues with his ankle, knee, and hamstring, which have significantly limited his playing time.

In 2024, Neymar made a return to his youth club, Santos, and his current contract is set to end in 2026.

In an interview with CazeTV through UOL, Neymar provided a candid update about his future.

Neymar during a match, reflecting on his career and future plans

'I am unsure of what lies ahead. It is possible that by December, I may decide to retire. I am living from year to year,' he shared.

'We have this year ahead, which is vital not just for Santos but also for the Brazilian national team and me personally.'

Neymar is aiming for a spot in Carlo Ancelotti's squad for the upcoming World Cup, which will take place in the United States, Mexico, and Canada this summer, although the national coach remains silent regarding his prospects.

The player admitted to exercising caution since his return to the first team in an effort to avoid further injuries.

'I aimed to be at my peak this season, which is why I had to limit myself in certain games. Many people speak without understanding the daily challenges I face, but I have to endure it. Santos devised an excellent plan for me in this regard.

'I genuinely wanted to contribute to my team, but I decided to wait to return at full capacity, free of pain or fear.

'In my last match, I was pleased and relieved to come back in better condition than before. I recognize that I still need to regain some rhythm, yet I believe that with determination, I can reach my full potential again. I will take it one day at a time, letting my heart guide me.'

Neymar’s statements follow a dramatic exit by former national teammate Coutinho from Brazilian club Vasco de Gama, where he expressed feelings of being 'mentally exhausted' in a heartfelt message on social media.

'I spent considerable time contemplating whether to write this,' he expressed on Instagram. 'But out of respect and love for the club and its fans, I felt I needed to share my feelings honestly.

'I chose to return to Vasco because I cherish this club deeply. Representing it was among the most significant decisions I made. Throughout each training and match, I gave my best. There was never a lack of dedication or commitment.

'Being judged for something not reflective of my character is incredibly challenging. I would never dishonor the fans, my teammates, or Vasco. That's not who I am.

'On my way to the locker room, I realized that my time at the club had come to an end, and I prioritized my mental health. That realization is painful.'
