A non-governmental organization, the Maternal Accountability Mechanism in Kaduna Initiative (KADMAM), has appealed to the Kaduna State Government to enhance the rollout of its health budget for 2026 in a bid to address the critical issues of maternal and child fatalities.

This request was articulated by the chairperson of KADMAM, Garba Mohamed, in a statement issued to commemorate the 2026 International Women’s Day (IWD).

"While today is globally recognized for honoring the accomplishments and resilience of women, it also serves as a crucial reminder of the need to tackle the health challenges jeopardizing the lives of women and children," KADMAM stated.

The organization highlighted that the high rates of maternal mortality and deaths among children under the age of five remain significant public health challenges in Nigeria. It emphasized that increased investment and the effective execution of health policies are essential to reversing this trend.

KADMAM commended the Kaduna State Government for prioritizing health initiatives, especially the efforts aimed at bolstering Primary Health Care services, which are typically the first point of contact for women and children in both rural and urban settings.

The group also expressed support for the recent supply of advanced medical equipment and ambulances to Primary Health Care centers throughout the state. This initiative is anticipated to enhance the quality of services, response to emergencies, and effectiveness of referral systems.

Governor Uba Sani remarked that this initiative represents the second distribution of cutting-edge medical equipment to Primary Health Care facilities since he took office, aiming to facilitate better access to quality healthcare at the community level.

However, KADMAM stressed the necessity of consistent funding, the availability of essential medications, well-trained health personnel, and greater access to family planning services as vital components for reducing avoidable maternal and child deaths.

As part of their statement, KADMAM called upon governments, development allies, civil society groups, and community leaders to intensify their efforts ensuring that every woman can safely deliver and that every child has a chance to survive and flourish.
