The Niger State chapter of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has publicly opposed the Hisbah law suggested by the State House of Assembly, arguing that it promotes segregation and discriminates against Christians.
The organization claims that the enactment of this law would exacerbate divisions among the diverse faith communities within the state.
Most Rev. Bulus Dauwa Yohanna, the chairman of CAN in Niger State, stated that the Hisbah Directorates Bill, introduced by the representative for Chanchaga Constituency, Hon. Mohammed Abubakar, could potentially lead to significant controversies. He called on the executive branch of government to refrain from endorsing it.
Furthermore, Bishop Yohanna emphasized that Niger State is home to multiple religions and urged the government to prioritize unity among its citizens instead of emphasizing religious differences.
He encouraged the State Assembly to concentrate on initiatives that would yield benefits for all residents. The CAN chairman reminded the lawmakers that there are existing security agencies, such as the Nigeria Police Force, the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, and various vigilante groups, which possess the authority to tackle social issues effectively.
