On Sunday, the vibrant performance of Wushu Kungfu took the spotlight in Nigeria’s capital, as the Nigeria Wushu Kungfu Association hosted the 2026 China–Nigeria Wushu Cultural Exchange.

This event, held in honor of the Chinese New Year, specifically the Year of the Horse, served to reinforce the growing 'people-to-people' diplomacy between Nigeria and China.

Mr. Sesan Adeboyejo, representing the President of the Association, Mr. Eric Ni, emphasized that Wushu transcends a mere combat sport.

He portrayed it as a 'lasting bridge of friendship,' incorporating philosophy, discipline, and health into a universal language built on mutual respect.

Adeboyejo remarked that this initiative fits well with President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, which interprets sports as a crucial element for job creation, tourism development, and enhancing Nigeria's global presence.

The event underlined the grassroots expansion of Wushu, especially in the North Central zone, where young enthusiasts are increasingly becoming 'cultural ambassadors.'

Nevertheless, the Association underscored that maintaining this momentum necessitates more than enthusiasm.

In a direct appeal, Adeboyejo urged prominent Chinese corporations such as Huawei, CCECC, and Sinopec to support the initiative through institutional sponsorship.

He stressed that investing in Wushu represents an investment in Nigerian youth, equipping them with valuable life skills and constructive alternatives to negative behaviors.

Additionally, Mr. Yang Jianxing, Cultural Counsellor of the China Cultural Centre, remarked that the principles inherent in martial arts, such as resilience and peace, reflect the enduring friendship between Nigeria and China.
