Nigeria and the United Kingdom have reaffirmed their enduring defence collaboration as part of ongoing efforts to bolster Nigeria’s ability to tackle evolving security threats through continuous international partnership.
This commitment was articulated by the Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), Olufemi Oluyede, while engaging with a delegation from the UK High Commission led by High Commissioner Richard Montgomery at the Defence Headquarters in Abuja.
Oluyede expressed gratitude to the UK for its ongoing support to the Armed Forces of Nigeria (AFN), particularly in the area of military education, specialized training, and enhancing operational capabilities. He emphasized that this cooperation is vital to both Nigeria's national interests and regional security goals.
The CDS reassured the commitment of the AFN to ongoing professional development and expressed confidence that a stronger alliance with the UK, specifically in areas like intelligence sharing and emerging security domains, would improve operational effectiveness significantly.
During his address, Montgomery congratulated the CDS for his service and acknowledged the advancements made in defence collaboration between the two nations. He reaffirmed the UK’s commitment to further strengthening defence relations with Nigeria, describing the partnership as forward-thinking and mutually advantageous.
According to a statement from the Director of Defence Information, Samaila Uba, the discussions aimed at enhancing operational and strategic cooperation to tackle dynamic regional and global security threats.
Additionally, the Defence Headquarters condemned the recent terrorist assaults in Woro and surrounding areas of the Kaiama Local Government Area in Kwara State, offering condolences to affected families and communities.
The military confirmed the deployment of troops for ongoing patrols and surveillance in the region, assuring the public that efforts would be intensified in collaboration with other security agencies to apprehend those responsible and ensure the safety of citizens across the nation.
