Botswana is poised for a significant shift in its energy landscape with the recent appointment of Nigerian energy executive Akinwole II Omoboriowo as Vice Chairman and Board Member of the Botswana Power Corporation (BPC). This appointment, announced on BPC's official platform, is part of the country’s strategic efforts to tackle ongoing electricity supply issues, diversify its energy resources, and aim for net electricity exports in the near future.

Omoboriowo, known for his leadership in the African energy sector, brings more than 20 years of expertise in large-scale energy generation, project structuring, and international energy development. He is currently the Chairman and CEO of GENESIS Energy Group, where he has overseen the development of utility-scale power projects exceeding 780 MW across several countries, including Nigeria, South Africa, Benin, Zambia, Rwanda, Zimbabwe, Mali, and the UK, with an ambitious project pipeline exceeding 4.5 GW.

His extensive experience spans various domains of energy infrastructure, including renewable energy initiatives, natural gas commercialization, energy market reforms, and specialized financing, all of which align closely with the reform priorities currently set by Botswana.

Addressing Energy Transition in Botswana

Recent reports from the World Bank indicate considerable fluctuations in electricity generation from Botswana’s coal plants, specifically noting a decline in output from the Morupule B plant, which decreased from 3,328 GWh for the 2022–23 period to 2,674 GWh for 2024–25. This trend highlights the pressing need to stabilize domestic supply.

Joining BPC at a transformative moment, Omoboriowo steps in as the corporation advances its Maduo 26 initiative, a five-year strategic plan initiated in 2022 aimed at enhancing operational efficiency and fostering financial stability within the corporation. Analysts suggest that the Maduo 26 strategy aligns with national priorities of diversifying the energy mix, increasing renewable energy generation, and bolstering grid resilience within the framework of Botswana's Integrated Resource Plan.

His new role underlines BPC's dedication to increasing renewable energy capacity, enhancing cooperation within the Southern African Power Pool (SAPP), and attracting investments in sustainable energy infrastructure.

This framework positions Botswana not only to stabilize its electricity supply but also to emerge as a significant electricity exporter in the SAPP. Omoboriowo's leadership is anticipated to emphasize effective governance, structural realignment, and ensuring that infrastructure projects lead to tangible operational and financial results.

A Broader Continental Perspective

Omoboriowo’s career illustrates a notable trend of intra-African mobility of expertise, using knowledge gained in various markets to address complex energy challenges. His background includes investment and project management across both conventional and renewable energy in countries such as the United Kingdom, with a focus on governance, financial efficiency, and rigorous execution.

In a recent LinkedIn post, Omoboriowo expressed gratitude for the trust placed in him by Botswana's President Advocate Duma Boko and Minister of Minerals and Energy, Bogolo Joy Kenewendo. He views this role as an opportunity to make a meaningful contribution to a national institution at a critical juncture.

"I take on this role with both humility and enthusiasm, pledging unwavering dedication to his duty. The tasks ahead are considerable, but so is the chance to impact positively on a vital national entity during a pivotal phase of its development," he noted.

Implications for Regional Energy Integration

As Botswana aims to diversify its energy mix and enhance system resilience for energy security, BPC's performance is essential to the nation’s industrial aspirations and regional competitiveness. Improved governance and oversight can significantly affect Botswana's reliability in energy as well as its strategic position within the Southern African electricity market.

With the Maduo 26 strategy nearing its 2026 target, Omoboriowo's influence as Vice Chairman places him at the center of one of the most significant transformation efforts in Botswana's energy sector in recent years, an evolution closely monitored by policymakers and energy stakeholders across the region.
