The Nigerian Army Training Centre (NATRAC) has begun an inquiry into a reported case of child abuse that occurred on March 4, 2026, at the Kontagora Military Cantonment in Niger State.

Major Godfrey Anebi Abakpa, the Assistant Director of Army Public Relations at NATRAC, announced the investigation in a statement released on March 5.

The incident became public after a soldier in the vicinity heard a child's cries coming from a nearby apartment.

Upon investigating the noises, the soldier allegedly found a 7-year-old girl being physically mistreated by her guardians, identified as two sisters who are her relatives.

According to the army's statement, initial findings suggest that the child was punished for her previous whereabouts.

There are also claims of neglect, which include deprivation of meals and being restricted from using essential home facilities.

Witness accounts suggest that similar abusive incidents may have occurred in the past, despite prior warnings.

It was reported that the child has been residing with her uncle's family at the cantonment since the death of her father.

She was brought to the barracks to receive care and to continue her education after that tragedy.

The child has since been taken to the Kontagora Military Cantonment Medical Centre for assessment and is confirmed to be in stable condition.

While the investigation is in progress, temporary custody of the child has been granted to a family within the cantonment who has voluntarily offered to take care of her.
